In 2011, over 40% of the population of Woolwich Riverside and Woolwich Common reported being born outside the United Kingdom. The center of Woolwich is about 8.5 miles (13.7 km) east of Charing Cross, the central gauging point in London, on the south bank of the River Thames. About 25% of the population in the two central wards were on benefits in 2011 (compared to 15% across London as a whole). Of the population over the age of 18, 31% had a higher education; nevertheless, less than 8% could be counted among senior staff. Nearly 47% of the population was white, 30% was black, 15% was Asian, and 8% was Arab or mixed race. In 2011, 30% of the total population was younger than 20 years, 47% was between 20 and 44 years old and 17% was between 45 and 64 years old. In 1963, 1971 and 1991 the English team won, in 1980 and 1995 the Spanish team won.
In the end, Wolverhampton finished first, nine points ahead of pursuers Cardiff City, which also enforced promotion to the top division of English professional football. Today, London City Airport is located here. Woolwich is identified as a major center in the 2015 London Plan. Woolwich sits at the foot of a 132m high hill, Shooters Hill, the second highest hill within Inner London. The medieval parish of Woolwich was smaller than the later borough, but larger than the two wards (constituencies) that bear the name of Woolwich today. One of the club's surprise signings was Portuguese international Rúben Neves, who was signed from FC Porto in the summer of 2017 for a record £15.8 million in The Championship. The company acquired the club for £45 million from Steve Morgan and his Bridgemere Group.
